«ΤΗΕ MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS»

Museum’s Collections of Books includes the first Greek scientific editions of Law, Physics, Medicine, Chemistry, Astronomy, History, Philosophy, Archaeology and Linguistics, as well as works of the first Professors of the University of Athens. Additionally, the collections consists of old and rare editions, writings of the neo-Hellenic Enlightenment era, rare anatomic maps and scientific yearbooks.

The Collection of Pamphlets includes newspapers, journals, leaflets with University’s anniversaries and speeches from Rectors, 19th century doctoral thesis, scientific announcements, as well as reprints.

Museum’s Collection of Portraits is part of the University of Athens collection of portraits. They are all works of important Greek artists, mostly of the 19th century. The collection includes portraits of University’s Professors and benefactors. There is also a small collection of 24 portraits of significant figures of national history and of the neo-Hellenic enlightenment era.

The Collection of Scientific Instruments includes instruments from Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Pharmacy and Medicine. They are all part of a larger scientific collection that can be found in the Old Chemistry building, near the junction of Solonos and Charilaou Trikoupi street.

Museum’s Collection of Old Photographs consists mostly of portraits from the first Professors of the University along with pictures from the life of the University.

Students’ cards, diplomas, lectures’ schedules, flags and trophies from students’ sport events are included in Museum’s Collection of University’s Souvenirs.

The Collection of Manuscripts comprises of handwritten books, documents, letters, notes as well as handwritten resolutions.

In the Museum’s Collection of Resolutions, handwritten letters that were sent to the University of Athens from Universities abroad, Archaeological Schools, schools from Greece, Constantinople, Smyrna, Andrianoupoli, for the occasion of various anniversaries, are included. Some of the resolutions (mostly those that were sent for the 75th anniversary of the University in 1912) are beautifully ornated manuscripts.

Museum’s Collection of Seals dates from the University’s foundation (1837), when it was pronounced “Othonion” and its symbol was King Othon’s escutcheon. The collection consists of seals from the various University name such as “National University”, “Kapodistrian University”, “National and Kapodistrian University” and “University of Athens”. Seals from University’s Schools are also included.

The Collection of Medallions includes various military and souvenir medals as wells as from the University and the Athens’s Academy.
